The first Neurology Center, Guntur in private practice was started by Dr.P.Vijaya MD.,DM (Neurology) as part of Heart & Brain center, Lalitha Super Specialities Hospital in November 1990 offering Neuro ICU & Wards with EEG/EMG/NCV. The first Stroke Unit is started in the same center in the year 1996 with 5 beds. Later it is developed into comprehensive state-of-art “Ankineedu Stroke center” with 24/7 inhouse CT scan, MRI scan, Stroke Action Team services for acute paralysis patients as well as complete solution for stroke patients including rehabilitation.
The first IV thrombolysis in Andhra Pradesh done in this centre during Nov 2004. This centre is pioneered in Neuro interventions in 2005 with intra arterial thrombolysis, Intra and Extra cranial angioplasties and stenting in acute stroke pts. From then, more than 450 pts received interventional stroke therapies, one of the largest data in India.
This center is one of the 12 in India selected for a European Stroke registry (SITS-NEW). Presented several International scientific papers on original clinical research on stroke in many National & International forums like a) World Stroke Congress-2006, Capetown, South Africa, b) WSC 2008- Vienna c) ISC 2009, San Diego, d) ESC congress- 2009, Barcelona, e) World Stroke Congress-2010 at Seoul, South Korea f) EUROPCR 2011, at Paris g) World Stroke Congress 2012 – Brasilia, Brazil.
Ankineedu Stroke centre (ASC) is the pioneer in stroke education public awareness activities. For their innovative activities, ASC received “World Stroke Day 2009 award” the very next year achieved the prestigious “The Gold Winner of the World Stroke Day” Award 2010 by World Stroke Organization standing 1st place from 84 Worldwide entries.
The Dept of neurology, Lalitha hospital is recognized by the NAT board for the DNB (super speciality) Neurology training after MD general medicine. The Neurology Department is part of many international clinical trials including REGENESIS study, Interact-2 for ICH, Polypill study and DIAS -3 study, Attend, Parkinson’s disease, Taping study etc.
Presently ASC is a high volume centre with more than 1000 stroke patients being treated per year.
